A little About Website Management

Design & Construction: The design and construction of a website is a lot like establishing a new marketing method. Many businesses today are processing their internal word processing, etc. Most of the next generation of word processors are now capable of saving files as HTML. However, this does not mean that these files can be seamlessly placed within websites. Website management still requires coordination. The construction of websites is different but similar to the process of preparing documents for printing. There are a lot of technical considerations in the printing world, color calibration, 4 color process separations, scanning resolutions, postscript fonts, etc. Instead of using Quark XPress, PageMaker, print publishing programs, the internet publishing tools are Microsoft Front Page, Adobe PageMill, Net Objects, Apples Home Page, etc. As with printing there are many considerations in the design of internet websites. In addition to the planning of browser friendly colors, there are also concerns of browser friendly type fonts, sizes, styles, text and graphic placement, animated objects etc. Then there are considerations for the type of graphics files, gifs, jpeg, tiffs, etc. How these graphics are scanned and imported to the site are important to the speed at which the site downloads to the viewers computer system.

Management & Control: The most important factor in the management of a website is the systematic control of its navigational structure which keeps track of the sites internal page hyperlinks. The more you grow your site the more critical this becomes. Navigation is the process by which you are MOVED around the site when you click buttons or underlined text to MOVE to another area. This text or button structure is usually found at the top or the left sidebar of the page. Each button points a link to a page of that section and that section may have further links to different areas of its topic and different topics within the site.

Software Program & Server: We develop our websites using the Microsoft Front Page-2000 program. Our sites reside on a Microsoft NT server running the Microsoft server extensions and our server is on a T1 communications line. Once a site is developed it resides on a server computer system which operates 24 hours a day so that your site can be visited when someone asks for your site name on the internet, (your www.address is called a URL Universal Resource Locator). If you plan to use your website for ongoing electronic marketing, just as you would be updating your print media, you should be updating your internet media. This process is usually the responsibility of your websites webmaster.

Webmaster Services: We provide webmaster services for $50.00 per hour. Depending on the design of your website, we can provide you with important site specification information so that you can provide update information to us electronically in a format that will be quick and expedient for us to manage the merging of new information to your site. If you choose to update your site from within your company, we will provide you with the complete informational specifications about your site design. If you plan to retain the structure of your site, you will need Microsoft Front Page-2003 in order to properly update, manage and control its navigational structure. We advise that you become familiar with Front Page and how to manage sites with it prior to taking over those webmaster responsibilities. We will work with your in-house people as co-webmasters only if it is determined by us that they are sufficiently Front Page capable of managing minor updates without violating the site. If you choose to manage your site completely after it is built, we will sign off as your webmaster. After that time we will have no responsibility for the management of your site. This is necessary in order to protect ourselves. Should your site crash or become structurally corrupted as a result of improper management we must be free from the responsibility of re-building it as such re-building can be as costly if not more than the original website construction.
